Why did you choose the MS Health Communication Program at Northwestern University?
I chose the MS Health Communication Program at Northwestern University for a few reasons. I am interested in a career change and believe there are many opportunities available in the healthcare industry. I have always been a huge fan of Northwestern, so it was at the top of my list. After researching a few other similar programs, NU’s program was the clear standout in quality and value.

What are your career goals?
My career goal is to work for an organization that creates or influences healthcare policy. Specifically, I would like to have a position that would allow me to change the FDA’s policies regarding medical implants and their processes for approving implants for use in humans.

What is your favorite part of the program so far?
Since I am just about the only student in the class that does not have a background in healthcare, I find our Hlth Comm 479 Proseminar extremely valuable. This course provides a lot of resources for job searching, interviewing, resume writing, career fairs and much more. We’ve also had some great speakers come to class to talk about how the material we are learning throughout the year is beneficial to either their current work or useful in addressing current problems in the healthcare industry.

Any tips on balancing school, work, and life?
Northwestern University has tons of resources that are available to students. Take the time to familiarize yourself with these resources. Also, set aside a couple of hours of each day to focus on assignments.

Is there any additional advice or information that you would share?
When you join this program, you realize how everyone involved, from the amazing program coordinators and directors to the TAs and professors, genuinely want to help you achieve your goals in the program. It is just an all-around great way to get an education!
