Tip #1 Personal Statements
Personal statements are tough! How can you eloquently capture your past experience, future goals, and your fit with a program in one to two pages?
A great personal statement requires some thought and self reflection. When people talk with a friend about what they want to do, they usually verbalize a pretty compelling essay. The trick is getting it down in writing. Here are some prompts that may help ease the writing process.
- What are your goals? More specifically, how will this program help you reach your goals?
- What do you hope/expect to get out of it? More specifically, what knowledge, skills, experience, or connections do you hope to take away from the program?
- What skills, experience, or perspective will you bring to the class?
- Why our school?
- Why now in your career/educational path?
An essay that addresses at least 3 out of 5 of the above is usually a pretty good essay. Five out of five is a great essay.
